From humble beginnings in 1976 with one team, the Woodstock Soccer Club (WSC) is a recreational club with a focus on developing its local players. The club is run by a Volunteer Board of Directors; however, it was started by one dedicated player!
An experienced soccer player and Coach, Walter Kirchner emigrated to Canada from Romania in 1970 and Founded the Woodstock Soccer League in 1976. An elite level Referee from 1973 until retirement in 2010, Walter officiated amateur and professional leagues. His knowledge and technical skills keep him involved today and he still provides instructions to young officials learning the game.
Inducted as a Builder of Sport and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Woodstock Sports Hall of Fame, Walter’s name is synonymous with soccer in our City and his dedication to soccer continues to benefit our community.
Recognized for his instrumental role, Walter has been given Honorary Lifetime Membership status of the Woodstock Soccer Club as voted on by the outgoing 2014-15 Executive Board at their final meeting. In his honour, the annual Walter Kirchner tournament was established in 1991 as well.
The objective of the Woodstock Soccer Club is to promote, develop and provide opportunity for any person in Woodstock and surrounding area to play organized soccer at the recreational and competitive level; as well as, to assist all participants in reaching their potential through the development of players, coaches, referees and administrators.

“I don’t believe skill was, or ever will be, the result of coaches. It is a result of a love affair between the child and the ball.”Roy Maurice Keane
